A Haven for Fire Survivor Pigs

In August 2023, wildfires devastated Lahaina, Maui. Amidst the tragedy, a remarkable story unfolded – the tale of 39 pigs who found refuge in a pond and miraculously survived the inferno.

The Maui Pig Sanctuary, a 501c3 non-profit is a local haven dedicated to rescuing pigs in need, stepped into action. Working tirelessly, they coordinated the rescue and relocation of these fire survivors.

A Journey of Hope and Care:

• In November 2023, four Polynesian piglets embarked on a cross-country journey. These brave souls, named Lahaina and Maui (after their birthplace) and two others, found new homes at Rancho Compassion, and When Pigs Fly Ranch sanctuaries in California.

• Five additional pigs were adopted by loving families right here on Maui!​

Today, all 39 fire survivor pigs are thriving. They have received essential medical care, been spayed/neutered, and vaccinated. Now they enjoy a life filled with:

• Spacious pastures to roam

• Refreshing rivers and lakes to cool off

• Mud wallows for playful fun

• Cozy straw-filled houses for restful nights

• Nutritious food to keep them healthy

• Abundant love and socialization​

This incredible rescue is a testament to the power of community and compassion.​
